No place like home
No place like home
Do you know the story of The Wizard of Oz?
First a book and then a film, characterized by its use of technicolor, fantasy storytelling, musical score, and memorable characters. The film has become an American pop culture icon and became a firm favorite as mine. Immortalizing the quote “There is no place like home.”
It especially reminds me of my youth. I often watched it at Christmas and since then, Christmas and the Wizard of Oz have become connected. Additionally, I once worked on this show, backstage in my local theatre in the late 1980s. I worked as a dresser who made sure everything was clean, beautiful, and working especially regarding the costumes.
The story is about Dorothy, a young, very sweet and innocent girl, the scarecrow, the tin man, and the cowardly lion. Her new friends have a lack of brains, heart, and courage. It could be said these are universal anxieties which most of us have had at one time or another.
By helping all three of them, Dorothy ultimately helps herself and starts the process of growing up as every child must do.
In one of Dorothy’s greatest moments of despair, the Good Witch Glinda magically appears.
She then lets her know that
“She has always had the power to go home.”
The Scarecrow is quite astonished, he then asks
“ Why didn’t you tell her that before?”
Glinda the Good Witch answers
” Because she wouldn’t have believed me, she had to learn it for herself “
I believe Glinda was my first encounter with a coach. Always there when she was needed the most. She didn’t offer advice or the answers until Dorothy had learnt for herself most of what she needed to learn.
Glinda eventually tells Dorothy that by tapping her ruby slippers and repeating “There is no place like home” she can return to Kansas and wake up from a dream that has taught her so many life long lessons.
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin man and the cowardly lion at the start of their journey didn’t believe they had enough of what they thought they needed in life. After at the end of their journey they had to use the resources that they already had.
Will I be smart enough to last the course?
Will my actions have heart and meaning?
Will I be brave in the face of adversity?
My answers are
YES to all three but will you believe me ?
